I love the new Tanqueray ads. Love them love them love them. Tony Sinclair is one of the best spokesmen for a product, ever—way better than Bacardi's ridiculous "Bacardi and Cola" 1970s-style pornstar wannabes. Tony Sinclair shows up in a total of four spots so far, taking Artic cruises and wondering how many icecubes could be made from a glacier, or having diamonds cut for his cocktail, "Well, you wouldn't put a donkey in the Kentucky Derby, would you?" Wink wink. Ahh, refreshing clever bar banter and danceable background music. Maybe MADD hates the return of advertising spirits on television, but we like it.Tony Sinclair. Socialite extraordinaire.

(Page 1)2. Just have to comment on Katt Parrs comment about the bacardi and cola ads. I think those ads are the coolest and MOST original commercials out. Those commercials are most definately funnier than the Tony Sinclair ads. I drink both brands and if you want to talk about lame, a black dude with a british accent is just as corny as it comes. Dont get me wrong, I like the Tony Sinclair commercials, but the bacardi and cola ads are just different and of course over the top, which makes it hilarious. I love those guys and the women that surround them.

4. Mr. Jenkins, Hef, & now Tony Sinclair....it doesn't matter who Tanqueray uses their advertising has always been lame.....
Bombay Sapphire's advertising has always been the standard bearer in the category. And Sapphire is so much more better than Tanqueray-image wise & taste wise.
cheers

7. The first time I saw the Tanqueray ad featuring Tony Sinclair I was surprised by their choice of spokesperson for the brand. The gap toothed smile and the funky hairstyle didn't seem to match the slick suit and british accent. One would expect a more handsome James Bondish type for a TV spot pitching gin, but after another viewing of the commercial I realized that the quirky imperfection of this Tony character was exactly what made it work; It's a clever move. Unlike some ad campaigns which are amusing but fail to produce sales results i'm guessing this promotion is going to boost the numbers.

8. The "MMMM" commercial opens in the VERY hip library of a VERY cosmopolitan home. The camra slowly pans across the partygoers, there is a particularily handsome, debonair "professor" type gentleman in a brown tweed blazer with elbow patches conversing about the origins of Woodrow Wilsons ill fated venture into war whilst charming a thin latina . The professor can be see to the right of Tony Sinclair on the tanqueray website- tell I am wrong - HE should be the star of the commercial- anyway Tony is in the kitchen shakin' it up- BRILLIANT ad. Fun, charming and elegant. I like "MMMM" the best - I wish they would run it more - The Shrimp eater one gets played frequently here in Los Angeles- Has anyone seen "MMMM" lately?

10. really enjoy the Tanqurey commercials with Tony Sinclair. At first I thought they were really dumb, looking at Sinclair as a ridiculous character not caring what he said his name was however, I knew they were Tanqurey commercials. After seeing the commercials over and over again, I began to look at Sinclair with fanicination, wondering "Who is this guy? What did he say his name is?" I like him -the intriguing socialite- and since I like him, I like the name Tangurey -I don't drink, but I would most definetly wear a T-shirt with Tanqurey and Sinclair on it!

11. Here are links for the uninitiated (may need to first prove over 21):
http://www.tanqueray.com/tony_sinclair/bio/ - main page for Tony Sinclair

Question, in Gemcutter, can anyone make out the title of the book he is reading? 1st word is MORE and I think last may be MONEY?

13. Yes - the tangueray spot was done inhouse here is the company's reply:
August 22, 2005
Dear Evan,
Unfortunately in-house performers created the song in the shrimp cocktail commercial specifically for the
spot. It is only a 30 second clip and therefore it is currently not available to the public.
We value consumers such as yourself and we appreciate your enthusiasm. If there is anything else we could
help you with now or in the future, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Once again, thank you for contacting us and for your interest in Tanqueray.
Sincerely

15. C'mon people. These spots are lame and derivative. It's like someone said "Hey, let's rip-off Austin Powers! Right down to the gap in his teeth, the British accent and the over-the-top laugh! Only, we'll make him black and that'll make it different!" Nice try, marketing guys. Not buying it. I bet half the comments posted in this blog are from the marketing guys at Tanquery or whatever ad shop created the spots.

16. It seems to be that a lot of the negative response in this has to do with Mr. Sinclair being a black man, and British. Hard as it may be to believe, there aRE black men in England. It's a country, just like any other, and if there are black people here, then there are over there, too. Further, I've been to England and Hong Kong (back when it was still under British rule), and YES there ARE black people there. Maybe it's just me, but some of these comments seem awful close to racist. Of course Tony sinclair is a corny character, but I definitely agree that it's a lot funnier and more memorable than the Bacardi and Cola spots. Is Sinclair's laugh fake? Anyone ever hear Star Trek's George Takei laugh? It sounds like he's putting on a fake laugh, too. Maybe Sinclair's laugh is fake, but just thought I'd put out that not every person's laugh sounds like the laugh tracks put on your favorite comedy show. That's how to tell it's canned laughter, because there's nothing memorable about it. I'm not so sure about the whole Austin Powers thing, because I never looked at the commercial and thought of Sinclair as a black Mike Myers. One thing to remember is the Mike Myers is an American actor playing a character with a British accent, so with the presumption that Sinclair is actually British, his accent would be real. I think the spots are a hoot, and I like the new holiday spot where the guy is playing "Deck The Halls" on the wine glasses, and Sinclair ponders which "note" he wants to drink first. I also dig the "scratch" effect when the girl on Sinclair's arem "plays" his glass. Bottom line: Doesn't have to be original, just memorable.

18. I get the schtick, and I don’t mind snobbish or eccentric, but man this guy is annoying. we’re supposed to like the character despite him being a snob socialite, unfortunately the way he does this character is just uncomfortably bad. the punchline laugh at the end doesn’t capitalize on the vibe, it just leaves you irritated. an eccentric James Bond villain with an ego would do this spot justice. I like roots manuva, tricky, dizzee rascal, n' goldie (they're all english right?). I hate Tony Sinclair. bacardi n' cola guy=funny, or atleast fun. Miami Vice?

19. Okay, call me crazy, but is Tony Sinclair actually actor Robert Towsend??? Visit www.roberttownsend.com and you tell me! Or watch him in Hollywood Shuffle as "Robert Taylor" of "Black Acting School"... Coincidence?

20. I can not remember when I have enjoyed a commercial more than the Tony Sinclair. Socialite extraordinaire christmas Tanqueray ad's. The Christmas ad's show Tanqueray in a very positive semi-sophisticated light. I honestly to not like most rap type music but this music I love. I even understand the idea and words used in the Tanqueray ad a rare thing for this ebonically challenged disabled black dude.
I usually do not drink anything other than an occassional dinner wine but, if I ever drank anything I would love to Tanqueray just because of these commercials. If I ever have any friends that like it I would love having a reason to buy some Tanqueray. I just love Tanqueray because of the commercial makes me want to buy it just because I like the upbeat fun funny way the ads present the product.
All I can say is I am one Wolf WOLF who can't wait to Tanqueray the Tony Sinclair Way.

1. Certainly not a marketing guy here, but am a happy consumer. I think the spots are right on. My kids like them as well. The other folks here must work for Fortune brands or Brown-Forman. Tanqueray used to be top shelf but has gotten a little rail. This should help regain some stature. Just don't raise the price anymore.
