Car classifieds publication Auto Trader is gearing up the attacks on it's local competition. It's started airing ads on local television that are specifically designed to differentiate it from local newspaper classifieds. The ads not only name the rival paper but compare price and what an advertiser could expect to get for that price in the paper versus what they could get from Auto Trader. What makes this so interesting is that it's not just a rivalry between classifieds services. Those services are owned, in many cases, by local newspapers. Auto Trader is owned by the Atlant Journal-Consititution. Cars.com is owned in part by the Tribune Co., which operates The Chicago Tribune. Chicago is currently the market under fire by Auto Trader.
