The MIT Advertising Lab was the first to hip me to Million Dollar Home Page, on which an enterprising young man in Great Britain sold advertising space by the pixel (well, not by the pixel exactly, as pixels are quite small) and has made quite a bit of money so far. MIT has looked into it a little more and discovered that many, many, many, um, many other people have latched on to the idea in order to raise money without having to do much work. My favorite so far is this site which sells "100% American made pixels" for one dollar each. God knows I'd hate to be unpatriotic.

November 25th, 2005 – England, UK
Veteran internet entrepreneur Dale Hubbard has today launched “The Six Million Dollar Cube". Although not a Lee Majors screenplay, the project has the potential to become at least the most popular screensaver of all time, with its mesmerising, rotating cube metaphor for selling pixel advertisements.
Hubbard has taken Alex Tew’s original novelty idea at The Million Dollar Homepage and given it literally a new twist.
Pixel advertising is the latest phenomenon to storm the internet. The basic idea is that individuals and corporations buy small ‘billboard’ squares which make up composite ad images and, according to Hubbard, will remain on the site for ten years. The potential for traffic is huge. If Hubbard’s site does take off it could be one of the world’s most visited sites; simply for the novelty value, and more importantly bringing millions of visitors to the site who will see and click on advertisers’ pixels.
The new site has provenance in Hubbard’s previous successes on the internet. He started a webmail service in 1998, and purchased a motorcycling fan site for £10,000 in 1999 – the first was sold to a public company and earned Hubbard £300,000, and the second was floated on the UK stock market with a valuation in excess of £13 million.
Hubbard’s latest venture can be found here:

Give it a spin. Literally.

A cool new concept in movie advertising in blocks of 100x100 pixels. Buy one block for life for only $1 per pixel or rent a picxel block for $100, and advertise your new image and link for free every month. It's a brand new concept in advertising movies to a targeted audience and drive visitors to your website directly.

I just wanted to inform everyone of this cool new portal in pixel movie advertising.

8. I'd say this million dollar or billion dollar page thing will die soon (if not in months but will be possibly in one or two years) because people are ignoring the fact that sites must have enough traffic to make such ads meaningful. The original site has higher than normal traffic because of the media spread online. These are pretty much non-targeted traffic, well do convert to sales sometimes since we are also customers.
When the followers flooded in, their sites will mostly have webmasters who are curious about this craze. Putting ads there simply doesn't make any sense, especially on sites with little or no traffic. If say they would gradully gain more traffic, who will be the visitors? Only when you type pixel related keywords will you have the chance to be ranked somewhere. Are online shoppers in the future would search things like 'pixel clothing'? I don't know, probably not. Why do we bother intentionally visit sites full of dizzy ads, even though you can have dedicated pages for different industries, when we can easily shop online as what we have been doing?
If somehow this really works for everyone, then eventually this pixel thing will merely produce lots of pixel shopping malls, and the concept will be the same as our regular shopping malls that many affiliates own. The difference will be the content should not have affiliate links included. But who knows? People may put up pages full of affiliate links and their merchant images.
So, people may be able to grab a piece of meat here and there, but this is a kind of meat will not be there forever. The concept makes sense for the inventor due to the fact the he got so much traffic with his crazy and unique idea. Even his traffic may die out gradually.
9. I agree that in time this whole thing will "die out" or evolve to the point that the original pages are truely antiques, but then that is what always happens in business.
It's a rare business that still has the original product produced in the same manner and marketed the same way. (Think the golf club company at St. Andrews.)
In the meantime, pixel ads are giving pause to how advertising will be handled in the future.
Search engines are on the constant lookout for fresh content.
There's only so much real estate on a page.
Authors are discovering that getting paid is good.
Not everyone can afford Google or Yahoo advertising.
Somewhere out of all this craze, ad delivery at the micro ad level and price will satisfy all, the advertiser, the ad company, the author, and most of all, the reader.
In the mean time, the good folks at PixelsAnyone.com are diligently developing multiple price point advertising, and even "two-fers" where you can sometimes pick up multiple ads on different sites...
You owe it to yourself to check us out.

10. Pretty poor imitation of the original if you ask me, as are most of the other copies starting to pop up.

12. I actually thought of doing something a lot like this several years ago, but I chose not to do anything about it. I didn't think it would work! I totally respect Alex Tew for doing this.
I’ve put together my own "spinoff" site with a twist - I’m trying to raise money for a new house, and the way my ad spaces work is a little different. I acknowledge Alex for paving the way for this new genre of page. When I sell a few more ad spaces, I’m going to buy a 30x30 ad on Alex’s page in appreciation.
My site is called “The Friendly Neighborhood Home Page.”

20. For the folks who think they can put up a page and make money doing nothing... GET A LIFE!
For real staying power a pixel site needs a plan to deliver traffic to the advertisers. That takes a lot of work, a little money, and a whole lot of time.
JPE Advertising (an 8-year old online ad agency) and AskShari.com (a site for straight answers about online marketing) have jointly developed http://pixelsanyone.com.
With our 13 JV Partners assisting with mailings to their targeted lists (over 10 million readers) you'll get your money's worth and more by grabbing blocks on our site.
We've made it very affordable... from .25/.50 to $1 per pixel in 100 pixel blocks. We offer an icon service (at an extra charge).
Simply put, your ad will be seen when it's listed at PixelsAnyone.com. We even provide you a stats area, where you can see how many clicks you've had.
See you there,
Shari Thomas
