Song, Delta Airlines' discount carrier, will be discontinued starting May of next year. The service will be incorporated into Delta, and no layoffs are expected directly from the change. The change comes after the airline filed for bankruptcy, but Buy it or DIE! claims the problem is that Song spent so much time trying to build up its brand it forgot to create a solid business. All of that energy spent on music and fancy cocktails was just wasted energy because there was no solid business foundation to begin with.
Why Song failed

(Page 1)2. when i flew song, i was greeted by a salsa-music-playing, ultra-stereoyped speedy gonzales-type character playing on the sound system, covering all the usual topics about safety etc that flight attendants would have done. i was looking around, because i couldn't believe any business could be so far off track. i really thought it was racist. on the flight back, the same thing only this time it was an irish character, still playing off all these stereotypes and complete with an exaggerated silly accent. all i could think was that there was some group of corporate geniuses coming up with these ideas and patting each other on the back, having no concept of what the actual experience of someone actually flying on this plane would be. was wondering how long til they folded.

3. I suspect though I have no evidence to support it, that if Song was as successful and profitable as it seems they were, the reason they were killed has a lot to do with internal politics and little to do with business. Companies that are going down in flames tend to succumb to fingerpointing and to canibalize it's young. I can just see the Delta brass looking over at those shiny nice 757's and wondering why they were still running the thirty year old aircraft that smelled of mildew.
Yes, Song probably went too far with the stores and maybe Delta will keep the best parts of Song, but as a Song frequent flyer I am going to miss them.
Oh, by the way, eggman, lighten up with the political correctness, I am hispanic and I thought the announcements were a funny and lighthearted way to do the safety instructions.

1. Adam ... actually the DO IT OR DIE blog simply copied and pasted my "SONG.GONE." post on Brand Autopsy.
DO IT OR DIE is a blog that aggregates content from a few blogs without proper credit. If this fooled you, it is bound to fool others.
