How did this not make the world, like, explode or something?
I just wrote a post about Google supposedly moving into placing ads in newspapers, with a Chicago paper being used as the first publication. Well here is the link to sign up for Google Publication Ads. This isn't just a repurposing of AdSense/AdWords for print publications, it's a whole new service that allows advertisers to use Google to buy print ad space. Ad buyers can choose pubs by circulation, demographics or keywords and then create the ad using text and graphics. Once it's finished Google will run it by the publisher for approval and then the ad will be placed.
The service is in beta (along with half the other things Google has going) and is available only via invitation at this point. I think this is huge that this is a whole seperate service from AdWords. With print circulation dropping, Google Publication Ads could have a great deal of negotiating power in their role as an ad-space reseller.

1. We are not impressed. Part of what makes adwords so special is that you can start it anytime, pause it anytime, test a million and one different ads and choose the ones that work most. This enormous flexibility is going to be missing from any paper-based advertising system.
