Popular video blog Rocketboom is auctioning off ad time during it's show and its using eBay as
the media buying agent. Marketers looking to secure placement should surf over to this
auction page and bid but they should know the caveats. First and foremost, payment is required upfront. Secondly, the
buyer will not actually be in control of the ad created. Instead, according to Adrants, Rocketboom creators
Andrew Baron and Amanda Congdon will create the ads, but the listing does say they will work with the winner. It's
tough noogies if they don't like it, though, since Rocketboom says that by bidding the advertiser is relinquishing
control of the ad. Gambling and porn sites need not apply since they'll be rejecting those outright.
It's an interesting play and definitely one that could send ripples through not just the online but the rest of the ad industry. Here are some citizen journalists that are deciding to play with the big boys and use an established third party (eBay) as a go-between. With 130,000 viewers for each show and the promise of post-campaign analytics it will be interesting to see how this one plays out.
