giant Sears is seriously considering ending
its 16-year-long relationship with home improvement guru Bob Vila. In his place would be stud-of-the-moment Ty
Pennington. Pennington and Sears aren't exactly strangers to begin with. The store sponsors his show Extreme
Makeover: Home Edition and Craftsman is the tool brand of choice on the show. Right now Pennington has done
various advertising for Sears and has a line of soft goods bearing his name in Sears outlets. The shift is based on the
fact that Pennington's show, along with his previous stint on Trading Spaces, has given him such exposure
that he's a household name. Despite the potential (eventual?) split with Vila it doesn't seem there are any plans for
Pennington to begin hawking Craftsman tools outside of their use on the show. The concern seems to be that he's too
"touchy-feely" for the Craftsman crowd.Sears Dropping Bob for Ty

(Page 1)2. I think it would be a mistatke to get rid of Bob Vila.....Ty is great I love him and the show, but does he really do any of the carpentry for his rooms. He is more of a designer not a fix it man!

3. I am disappointed to hear about Sears possibly letting go of Bob Vila. I have been watching Vila for a long time. He is like an icon of home improvements. As for Pennington, I do not remember hearing his name but I have watched a couple episodes of Trading Spaces and I have not watched any Extreme Makeovers. I hope Sears reconciders the idea of Trading People.

4. Sears who?

5. Ty's probably great for women or 'brokeback carpenters' that watch. But for most builders Villa is the guy who's been trusted for years. He has hands-on experience that Ty will have a tough time competing with. Keep Villa or, if you want to appeal to everyone, make Ty a sidekick. Brad

6. Bob Villa will always be associated with the Sears name and brand to those true and long customers of Sears. He is an established icon for Sears building materials, particularly, as featured on his home building and home refurbishing programs, before Trading Places aired and became so very popular. The disassociation with Bob Villa would negate the phrase that "the older is more reliable", completely. My opinion and philosophy in this issue, is to meld the older with the newer. A younger generation has developed a relationship with Ty Pennington before he associated himself with Sears. He is viewed as a cute, intelligent, talented humanitarian that helps builds people's dreams. Grandmothers get to love him, while their granddaughters dream of being his wife. The two, Villa and Pennington would serve all your customer needs, and all your customer bases.
I believe in change and progressing forward, but there is something to be said, also, about the older being reliable. Both icons represent different things to the Sears followers, and both should represent Sears in a partnership. There is not only one way of doing things.

9. I think it is a great idea to replace Bob Villa. Ty has become an icon by really doing work and knowing about tools. Bob Vill does not hammer his own nails on his "This Old House" episodes. All the holes are pre- drilled for him. Anyone who has seen any of Ty's shows can see he does know how to use any tool. Sears has made many changes in their stores so why not change faces to.

10. Ever since Sears was bought out by KMart, the changes in the store have completely dissappointed me. From their new clothing line to this no revelation of trying to get rid of someone so notibly recognizable as Bob Vila. I have been watching Bob Vila for many, many years. I think he has a comfort value as well as a knowledge of his craft that he shares on all of his shows. If you get rid of Bob Vila, then you are going to lose a great deal of customers of his age and caliber. It seems to me that if you want to keep the loyalty of your customers, than you have to be a little more loyal to them. Change is good unless you completely eliminate the obvious. Do you REALLY want to allienate the retired crowd whom have the time to work on crafts or do you want to inter-mingle the two to get a broader customer base? The choice is yours, but I know which one I would take.

11. I always say that I was ordered from Sears in Atlanta, as my dad was an employee for more than 25 years after WWII. So as a long time "family" member, I'd like to see both generations stay with Sears.

16. Ty might be too "touchy-feely"? Thats putting it mildly, they might have to soften the colors on the tools. Bob Vila is an icon, and fit perfectly with craftsman tools, but unfortunatly his knowablity isnt there anymore since his shows were showing real people doing real work, while todays "reality tv" is more a combination game show "real world".

18. How could one even think for trading Bob in for Ty, or anyone else for that matter. Bob Villa "IS SEARS"!Matter of fact, would probably do Sears good to incorporate his name in with theirs (Villa/Sears).Folks know that Bob is the best at what he does and they trust him. Ty should just stick to his decorating shows or whatever and as far as cute, Um No, see no cuteness there, no heartthrob material there. Some things you just shouldn't change. Taking the Bob out of Sears is one of them.

19. Even K-Mart couldn't buy Sears out of THIS bad business decision!
Posted at 7:34AM on Mar 5th 2006 by Paula
20. Personally, I think you should stick with Bob Villa. Ty Pennington is too egotistical for me to enjoy, I really watched Trading Spaces more after he left and I do not watch his current show.

1. As far as Bob Villas show it is the best thing they ever did, he would start something and never go into all the details to fix it It was liking to start something and then be left in the dark to finish, at least other ones like Al Carroll etc. guided you through from begining to end of project, I stopped watching BOB many years ago and could not see why Sears ever sponsered him
