I
have an admission to make: I fast-forwarded through most of the ads during last night's Oscar broadcast. I made little
mental notes of some of the big ones (Tab Energy, Mastercard's fill-in-the-blank spot) but for the most part I was just
watching for the bits of Jon Stewart, who I thought killed as host.
Little did I suspect that I would be watching some ads anyway. By far the best commercials of the night were the mock attack ads created by Stewart and his Daily Show team. Created to resemble political ads, one featured an elderly couple who felt suspicious of all the "foreign-sounding" first names of the Best Supporting Actress nominees. One stood out as clearly American, though: Reese. Another attacked Charlize Theron for being unattractive in North Country but praised Keira Knightly, whose cheekbones must be sprinkled with "God dust", for "acting while hot." The tone of delivery and thematic structures were so close to those actually used for political attack spots that they were among the funniest bits of the night and, unlike the endless montages, actually added something to the show.
