Just in time for the theatrical releases of sequels or reimaginings, a few new DVDs are hitting the shelves. New DVDs
have become an increasingly popular component of the movie marketing mix in the last few years. First, Paramount will finally release a special edition of Mission: Impossible just three weeks before M:I3 debuts in theaters. The DVD will contain tons of new features (I don't think the original had any bonus items) as well as a free ticket to see the J.J. Abrams-directed new installment.
Secondly, Warner Bros. has launched a new website to celebrate the Year of Superman. It's part of the extended push for Superman Returns, opening this summer. There's a really neat trailer that incorporates footage from all the incarnations of Superman over the years, from the black-and-white TV show to the Christopher Reeve films to the WB's Smallville. Also being released, again, just weeks before the new movie, are special edition DVDs of the first two of the Reeve films as "Director's Cuts."

1. I saw Mission Impossible I when it first came out in theaters, and did not watch it again until I bought this double disk set. I enjoyed it just as much if not more than it's incredible sequel. Both movies together, even though they are very loosely related, add up to a great buy.
