Nielsen to measure computer TV watching

Before the end of 2006, Nielsen plans to introduce a system to measure television programming people are viewing over the internet. The move is a response to the increasing options people have as to where and when they choose to watch TV programs, be it streaming over the net, on their iPods or any other platforms that are or might be available. Speculation is running along the lines of measurement being done via some sort of software people would download to their computers that would send information back to Nielsen. That's similar to how Nielsen currently measure internet site ratings. This addition to the portfolio could be as significant as Nielsen's addition of time-shifted ratings to the mix. It will especially be interesting to see the difference between non-TV based viewing that is and isn't ad-supported.
