A recently
filed patent shows that Google is looking at ways to
deliver ads to people using wireless Internet hotspots. Such hyper-targeting of ad delivery could be a huge benefit to
local advertisers. If someone is using the hotspot at a Starbucks, for instance, then a sale going on at the record
store down the street could be served to the user. In another potential application is to allow for ad-supported free
access to the wireless connections instead of a pay-per-minute or other business model locations might be using. Ads
would be delivered, according to the patent, based on a variety of factors including location, viewing history and type
of business the hosting-location runs. Google is also looking for flexibility to offer ad-delivery based on whether the
end-user is a frequent surfer or just an occasional one.
