PBS plots for the future

PBS is a station - and service - that I rarely use (other than to sedate/entertain the kids) but would sorely miss if it were gone. In an effort to avoid public broadcasting from falling under the axe of governmental budget constraints the group and others have created a website to promote awareness of just how important PBS is. The goal is to make it easy for the public to tell their congressional representatives about how they use PBS and what it means to them. The theory is that Congress couldn't possibly cut funding from something that's so popular. This online push comes as some PBS executives are becoming concerned about stations that dabble a little too deeply into online advertising. That could, as PBS president Paula Kerger says, violate the very notion that public broadcasting operates under. As advertising comes more and more to the new media that PBS is going to begin offering it will be interesting to see how they weigh the competing interests of non-commercial programming and potential revenue streams.
