Online advertising is becoming a bigger and bigger source of revenue for newspapers as print ad income experiences lower rates of growth. According to the Newspaper Association of America, spending on print advertising in the first quarter of 2006 was up just 0.3 percent. That's a far cry from the 35 percent rise in online advertising in the same period. While each newspaper figures out its own online ad sales strategy, all papers are facing a common threat from free online classifieds providers. 60 percent or more of a newspaper's ad income comes from classifieds and they're fighting to keep that up. They're highlighting the personal attention that advertisers get at newspapers as opposed to the faceless editors at sites like craigslist and others.
