Good news for fans of bloated, middle-of-the-road pop music: the Eagles are making more albums. They've also signed a deal with Wal-Mart that will give the chain exclusive rights to sell all future releases from the '70s supergroup. The deal does smack of a kind of cosmic harmony, since Wal-Mart is known for selling cheap goods to a mass audience and The Eagles are known for essentially the same thing. The only advice I would give Wal-Mart is that all new releases from the band should also be available on 8-track, since I'm pretty sure most people who still listen to The Eagles are those who were stricken with amnesia in the 1970s and still rock out to "Hotel California" while feathering their hair and debating whether they should wear their Fonzie t-shirt for the third day in a row or toss it in the hamper. That's an untapped demographic Wal-Mart really needs to take advantage of.The Eagles and Wal-Mart, together finally

4. Okay, I'm a fossil. I listened to and often enjoyed the Eagles in high school and college. And I've enjoyed a lot of Henley's solo stuff since then, maybe because I've played an instrument, and I've seen the professionalism of his live shows. (Musicians often appreciate the Eagles for different reasons than the general listening public.) Taste and opinions are our rights, obviously, but the tone of this post seems unnecessarily hipper-than-thou to me. Music, and other arts evolve by being derivative. Artists are influenced by and build on the best elements of other artists. That's how art progresses. Yes, I hate to see a band tied to a store. On the other hand, I think the Eagles have earned their place in the evolution of music.

1. in other news, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Buddy Holly and perhaps most notably, Tupac Shakur, will all be marketing their new studio releases directly through Wal-Mart's new funereal audio strategy.
